The Magic of Moxa

Moxibustion (or “moxa”) is a bridge between ancient wisdom and your baby’s natural instinct to move. By warming the Bladder 67 (Zhiyin) point on the outer corner of the little toe with a moxa stick-made from the therapeutic herb Mugwort-we gently stimulate the flow of energy.

This pleasant heat does something remarkable: it encourages the baby to become more active, creating the “space” and “energy” needed for them to somersault into the correct head-down position. Many mothers describe the sensation as a quiet, soothing signal from baby that they are ready to turn.

It’s a gentle, non-invasive way to support your baby’s natural turning process during the third trimester.

Breech Support FAQs

Is moxibustion safe in pregnancy?

When used appropriately by a trained practitioner, moxibustion is generally considered low-risk and non-invasive. We always screen for individual circumstances, and we recommend you continue routine care with your midwife or obstetric team.

How many sessions do I need?

Usually, just one in-clinic session is enough to get you started. During this visit, we perform the treatment and, most importantly, teach you or your partner how to continue the 10-day protocol at home. We provide you with the moxa sticks and a guide to ensure you’re confident doing it yourself.

When is the best time of day to do moxibustion?

Many mothers find that doing moxa in the evening is most effective, as babies are often naturally more active at night. It’s also a lovely way to wind down and connect with your baby before sleep.

What position should I be in during the treatment?

Comfort is key. You can sit in a reclined position on a sofa or bed with your feet easily accessible. We’ll show you the best ways to get comfortable during your initial session.

Does the moxa touch the skin?

No. The moxa stick is held a few centimetres away to create warmth without contact. You should feel warm, not burned. If it feels too hot, tell us straight away.

What does it feel like?

Most people describe it as a soothing, penetrating warmth. Many also notice baby becoming more active during or after treatment.

What does moxa smell like?

It has an earthy, herbal smell (a bit like sage). If you’re sensitive to smoke, let us know. We’ll talk through options and ventilation.

Can I do moxibustion if I’m having twins?

If you are expecting twins and one or both are breech, we recommend speaking with your consultant or midwife first. While moxibustion is gentle, the space requirements for two babies to turn are different, and your medical team will have the best overview of your specific circumstances.

When should I stop the treatment?

You should stop as soon as you feel a big movement and suspect the baby has turned, or once your midwife confirms the baby is head-down. If you reach the end of your 10-day home kit and the baby hasn't turned, we can discuss next steps or transition into birth preparation.

Can my partner do the treatment for me?

Absolutely. In fact, we encourage it. It’s a great way for partners to be involved in the pregnancy journey. We’ll train them during your appointment so they feel 100% confident.

What if it doesn’t work?

You’ve still got options, including ECV and planned birth pathways guided by your maternity team. Moxibustion isn’t a guarantee. It’s a gentle way to support the body’s processes and potentially improve the odds during the right timeframe.

Can I do birth preparation acupuncture and labour preparation acupuncture as well?

Yes, where appropriate. Many people choose birth preparation acupuncture and labour preparation acupuncture later in the third trimester (often from around 36-37 weeks). We’ll keep it evidence-based and aligned with your maternity care plan.
