Acupuncture and Reflexology to prepare for labour

Clinical studies have shown that acupuncture can help with the birthing process, decreasing the amount of time women are in labour, and thus reducing the chance of complications and medical intervention.

Weekly acupuncture treatments from the 36th week of pregnancy can be an excellent way to prepare your body for labour. The aim of these is to relax your mind and body, encourage the baby to optimal position for birth and energize you in preparation for birth.

A clinical study in New Zealand (Betts & Lennox, 2006) showed that women who had pre-birth acupuncture saw a:

• 35% reduction in medical inductions (43% in women having their first baby)

• 31% reduction of epidurals

• 32% reduction in emergency caesarean delivery

• 9% increase in normal vaginal births

Induction of labour

Studies have shown that women treated with acupuncture when overdue are less likely to require medical induction of labour (Rabl, 2001).

When you come for your treatment, I’ll teach you and your birthing partner simple but effective acupressure techniques for use during labour. These techniques can help to reduce pain, promote relaxation, improve the baby’s position and encourage the natural progress of birth. These techniques will also empower your partner to become actively involved in the process of labour.
